The “American Idol” judging panel will have plenty of starpower for season 12. The Fox network announced that Nicki Minaj and country singer Keith Urban will join “American Idol.”
The news came yesterday – just hours before the first round of judging for next season was due to begin in New York.
Randy Jackson will be the sole remaining original “Idol” judge, squashing rumors of a different role for him on the popular talent competition.
This trio joins newcomer Mariah Carey on a judges panel now expanded to four members from its previous three.
Minaj and Urban filled vacancies left by Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, who announced their exits in July.
“American Idol” returns for its 12th season in January.
Information from Fox and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
