Most of us do not think about pampering our feet until spring arrives so we can wear sandals or when we start to have problems like pain, corns or excessively dry skin.

Our feet have the burden of supporting our entire weight on a regular basis! The foot is made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles. There are 250,000 sweat glands in a pair of feet. The sweat glands excrete as much as a half-pint of moisture a day

For all the hard work that they do, we should pamper when possible.

It is important for everyone to take care of their feet, especially those with diabetes. Diabetics should be careful soaking their feet in warm water if they have open wounds on their feet. This could lead to the spread of an infection or delayed healing. If you are a diabetic, consult your physician before performing any foot care on your own.

Here are some tips on giving yourself a refreshing at-home pedicure.

Set aside some time for yourself, take the phone off the hook and inform family and friends that you will be busy for quite some time.

To make the environment more relaxing, play some soft, relaxing music of your choice and light a few candles around the room. I would also recommend investing in a foot bath, preferably one that has temperature control, that vibrates and produces bubbles.

You can soak your feet first to soften the hard skin and then remove it by using a pumice stone or some type of sloughing cream. The other method of removing dead skin involves a wonderful little product called the Ped-Egg by Telebrands. You can probably find one at your local retail store. The Ped-Egg should be used on dry feet only and is gentle to the skin. After using it, I recommend that you soak your feet in warm, soothing water for approximately 15 minutes.

After removing the rough skin from your feet, trim your toe nails and give some attention to your cuticles. Cutting them in a square shape could help to prevent ingrown toenails. Never cut your cuticles! Your cuticles help keep bacteria from entering your skin. Gently push the cuticles back with an orange stick or some other item that is designed for pushing back cuticles.

Now it’s time to moisturize and massage!

Dry off your feet with a towel and apply a refreshing foot cream. Moisturizing your feet will help to keep them smooth and soft. Gently massage in long upward strokes, starting at your toes and moving toward your calves. As a final step, apply your favorite nail polish to your pampered toes. During the winter, moisturize your feet before going to bed and wear a pair of cotton socks.

Products that I recommend include Flori Roberts’ Crème Brulee Body Souffle, Flori Roberts’ Healing Balm, Flori Roberts Shea Nut Body Butter. Gale Hayman’s Foot Spa is great to use before going to bed. It’s best to wear a pair of cotton sock to bed when using this product.

By giving that special attention to your feet, not only will they look great but feel great as well!
