Filmmaker/producer Spike Lee has teamed with HBO to direct and produce a documentary about Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath in New Orleans.

Rumors have hit the streets that Lee secretly went to the city with a camera crew to collect footage.

The documentary, tentatively titled, “When the Levee Broke,” will document the United States government’s failure to adequately assist the New Orleans black community and explore conspiracy theories of government involvement in the levee breaks.

“It’s not too far-fetched. … I don’t put anything past the United States government,” Lee told CNN. I don’t find it too far-fetched that they tried to displace all the black people out of New Orleans.”

Lee says he will use “factual journalism,” instead of creative narrative in his look at Katrina, New Orleans and the government.

The documentary is expected to air next year on the anniversary of the disaster. The filmmaker will begin production early next year after he completes the Universal Pictures mystery/thriller, “Inside Man,” starring Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster.
