Single tickets on sale now for 2006-07 season
Single tickets for the 2006-07 season at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis went on sale Monday. This year, the Touhill’s usual mix of international and national performances in comedy, opera, pop music, classical, jazz and big band will be given an additional boost of soul with the addition of gospel to the lineup.
Grammy Award-winning gospel vocalist CeCe Winans will hit the Touhill on Sunday, October 15, and the Harlem Gospel Choir will perform on January 14, 2007 in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
The Touhill’s innovative Fusion Series enters its sophomore season as the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra’s music director David Robertson leads collaborations with jazz, percussion and vocal artists.
The “Fusion Series” begins Wednesday, October 25 with the SLSO’s collaboration with London’s Synergy Vocals, performing works by leading American composer Steve Reich as part of the year-long international celebration of his 70th birthday. On January 17, Robertson will conduct Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale scored to tango, march, waltz and ragtime. On March 20, Henry Claude and the Nuclear Percussion Ensemble will join Robertson and SLSO percussionists for “Explosions: A Festival of Percussion.”
The “Swingin’ Sounds” series this season will feature The Jim Widner Big Band, led by UMSL’s Artist in Residence/Coordinator of Jazz Studies Jim Widner, with Simply Sinatra on November 7. The legendary Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra takes the stage with America’s Hits On Parade on January 21, followed by the jumping swing sounds of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on April 28.
The “Laugh Lines” series kicks off the Touhill’s fourth season with two-time Emmy-nominated Wayne Brady on September 16, followed by Bob Newhart on October 29. Chicago-based improv favorite The Second City returns to the Touhill, its official St. Louis home, for what are guaranteed to be sold-out performances on May 11 and 12.
In other contemporary shows, American tenor Michael Amante and the Grammy Award-winning R&B husband-and-wife team of Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. deliver two special Valentine’s Day-themed performances in February. American folk legend Arlo Guthrie returns to the Touhill on October 14, joined by his family to celebrate Guthrie family patriarch Woody Guthrie. The Manhattan Transfer present its Christmas show in December, and Les Folies Russes, featuring 50 classically-trained Russian dancers and 1,000 spectacular costumes, will perform March 23.
Opera aficionados will enjoy three performances in the original languages with English supertitles: Puccini’s Madame Butterfly on November 11, Donizetti’s Lucia Di Lammermoor on January 20 and another Puccini opera, Turandot, on February 11.
Single tickets start at $15 and may be purchased by calling (314) 516-4949 or toll-free (866) 516-4949, online at www.touhill.org, or at the Touhill Ticket Office on the UMSL campus Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Group and student discounts are available.
