For the third time, Oprah Winfrey has been named the most charitable celebrity. Through the Oprah Winfrey Foundation, the media mogul has donated more than $41 million toward education for women and children.
In a distant second is novelist Nora Roberts who gave $4.45 million to her organization that supports literacy, children’s programs, and other humanitarian efforts. Others on the list include Meryl Streep and hubby Donald Grummer at $4 million, Jami Gertz and Tony Ressler at $2.9 million, and Lance Berkman and Cara Berkman at $2.1 million.
“There are many generous celebrities, but when you can top a list of celebrity philanthropists three out of four years, as Oprah has, that is saying something,” Marc Pollick, president of The Giving Back Fund, said. “Combined these celebrities donated nearly $80 million of their personal wealth to charities. We hope that in recognizing the extraordinary generosity of these celebrities, we will encourage and promote greater and more authentic giving among those blessed with both wealth and fame,” Pollick added.
