People are still talking about Smooth Jazz being erased from area airwaves – even people who had long stopped listened to the station because it didn’t play traditional jazz. But that isn’t the story, because jazz purists just weren’t into smooth jazz (though a traditional jazz show on the station would have helped).
The story is that FOXY 95.5 is making so much noise on the airwaves that it was a major factor in Smooth Jazz’s failure to up its listener base. FOXY Program Director Garth Adams is also getting big ups for doing his thing. One industry insider predicted that FOXY is about to blow Majic out the box. She said that, when you have a good morning show, the rest of the day does well.
Now, I admit I haven’t been listening to the Majic’s new morning show, but Chaz Saunders gets down. I did check out the Radio and Records ratings to compare the two stations and found that FOXY is creeping up on both Majic and 100.3 The Beat. Well, we’ll see when the books hit in a week or so.
I guess hip-hop fans are slowly tuning into the only urban, hip-hop format in the Lou. Some have switched to Clear Channel’s other station – Z 107.7 – that plays a hefty offering of hip-hop.
Another point in radio land is that FOXY 95.5’s Sky Show with Tom Joyner on April 29 has moved from the Clear Channel-affiliated Pageant to the Roberts Orpheum. The musical guests include the Isley Brothers and American Idol shooting star Fantasia.
