I can’t believe how many people are surprised by Will Smith’s fine performance in his first romantic comedy film, “Hitch,” which topped the box office last weekend with more than $45 million. If you can’t remember the comedic role he aced as Will in the successful sitcom, “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” catch the syndicated reruns weeknights. Or listen to some the old fun-loving Fresh Prince rap tapes. It was in him all the time. Will is hilarious, so I’m not surprised. I’m also willing to bet on the success of urban theatre icon Terry Perry and his transition to the big screen with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” which opens in next weekend. I’m really feeling this romantic comedy direction that a lot black film pros are taking. Our own funnyman, Cedric the Entertainer’s “Man of the House” should be out soon.
