The Intimate Truth Tour should have been called the “Delightful Dose of Soul” tour, because that’s what I experienced Sunday night at the Pageant. I know plenty of folks are going to be bothered by my take on Leela James, but oh well. Every time I see her perform, I feel like she is giving me a taste of what would have happened if Reesie from the “Cephus and Reesie” “In Living Color” skit had gone solo – a bunch of aimless and note-less hollering that folks can’t help but love. Raheem DeVaughn drove the girls wild with his soulfully rehashed R&B swag that pays homage to old and new. Headliner Ledisi lived up to every expectation I had with her latest STL visit – and to be able to do so on the heels of bronchitis shows what she is capable of. When she left the front row hanging to sing with the folks in the balcony and called them out for being stiff, she earned a permanent space in my hall of fame. After the show I stepped over to the Halo Bar for Daryel Oliver’s birthday party, where I ran into Hot 104.1’s Boogie D and Jami Ballentine Dolby, Gary Gunter, Dave from Rustic Goat and more.
