I can truly say that I haven’t laughed as hard as I did Sunday night at the Ambassador for my boy Jovan Bibbs’ Klass Klowns comedy show since circa 2007. The whole night and a few close encounters of the ratchet kind had me boostin’ jokes and reenblackting for the rest of the week. I had never heard of headliner Shawn Morgan before, even though he was the protégé of Bernie Mac and has been a hot television comic for more than a minute. But when he went in on this brother wearin’ a lily white do-rag who had (I really believe it was a up-the-sleeve smuggle situation) a big bottle of Seagram’s Gin and was actin’ like he was ballin’ out of control, I knew he would be a must see.

“How you tryin’ to floss with a bumpy face bottle,” Morgan said about the man as he walked from table to table – talking to strangers – showcasing that bottle like it was a cute baby. But bumpy face bottle wouldn’t sit down without being sat down – which I’ll get to in a hot second.

Just getting over the chuckle from Morgan, Arvin Mitchell steps to the stage and goes in on the “West Side fo’ life (her words, not mine)” woman working the door.

He was brave, because she was a bit husky. He was hee-larious during his set.

Then Morgan stepped to the stage and had me at “Tupac” when he started talkin’ about my favorite rapper’s music.

“Man, listening to Tupac you didn’t know whether to kill somebody, kill yourself, keep your head up or write a letter to your mama,” Morgan said. “And that’s all in one album. Man, I was listenin’ to ‘Pac one day and my partner called me. He was like ‘what you getting’ ready to do.’ I was like ‘I was getting ready to do some wreckless [expletive], but I guess I’ll take my mama some chocolates.”

Classic!

After he wrapped up, do-rag came up ready to freestyle rap…and let’s just say that the bottle of “bumpy face” was empty by then, and he had to be walked on out the door.

The whole night was a blast, especially the way Jovan was doing a play-by-play as do-rag went back to his seat. He’s supposed to be doing it every month. I’ll certainly keep y’all posted.
