Always a girl checking for the next generation of the St. Louis music scene, I perched at the Pageant again on Friday night to see what teen rap duo JGE was working with. It wasn’t the first time I’ve seen them on stage, but it was the first time witnessing them put on a full-fledged show and full-length set. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t impressed, but I’ll get to the actual show in a second. First, let me get to the parents of these girls who came out wearing six-inch stilettos – when it was clearly the first time they had on heels of any kind. Start them out with a kitten pump or a wedge so they won’t look too fast or walk like The Mummy was their mama and Frankenstein was their daddy. I saw so many arms extended for the sake of securing balance that I felt like I was on the set of an urban teen horror flick. And I don’t have the space to truly get into the outfits, except to ask the poor child with “Trap Girl” written down her sleeves if she even knows what a “trap’ is? Okay, that being said, let me get to JGE. Since I’m already talking about young people doing grown folks stuff, I think I need to point out that some of their lyrical content is too mature for them – or their audience. Other than that, I was utterly impressed. They held it down with energy and stage presence that stars are made of – so much so that when Nelly took the stage he just kind of hung back and let them do their thing. I was also pleasantly surprised to see his daughter NaNa come out and perform the hook on one of JGE’s songs. I don’t know how she sounds live, but on the strength of the track she has a nice voice on her.
