If you didn’t know before Valentine’s Day where you stood with your boo, I’m sure it’s safe to say, now you do. Folks who are truly and securely in love, you’re fine, just as long as you brothers know that V-day is a romantic event where you show the utmost love. Now, who I’m really speaking to is the “playas” and “playees.” Sisters let V-day be a barometer for your man’s fidelity. If he can’t spend the entire evening with you, you need to check into that. You sisters who are dating two or three guys, but haven’t established anything serious with either interest, you need give the one you would rather spend V-Day with some kind of hint. Since brothers are playas themselves, a lot times they know if you’re dating other people or not, so as V-Day nears they wait for your play. And thank God for singles parties on Valentine’s Day. That’s when you can really peep who’s really single and living single.
I rolled through one set, Chocolate Soul Live at Plush last Monday. I like the way Soulistic-NYC, TRAACES and Muse did it up for V-day. It was an equal opportunity romantic set, fit for singles and doubles. There were a lot artsy, neo-soul types which means you will always see some funky funky hairdos. I’m digging that afro Quin Binion is rocking since she cut her locs. Selena J still isn’t short-stopping with her lengthy naturally curly ‘do. Girlfriend hosted the joint and laid some spokenword on us. Way to bring it sister. I was blown away, though, by Coultrane and Black Spade’s (Vito) performance. As always I knew Spade could spit, but I was one of those unfortunate one’s who hadn’t been blessed with Coultrane’s performance. But I always said with a name like Coultrane he better be good. Well, the brother is better than good n he’s bad. American Idol contestants DeAndre Perryman and Philippe got hold to the mic for minute and put down a lil something-something. DJ Needles was on the ones and twos, so after the performances we partied to a funky selection of new and old-school hits. Some deejays make it seem so simple. I wish someone would holla at the deejay at Skate King. Anyway, we artsy, neo-soul, hip-hop intellectuals kicked it on V-Day, whatever emotions were pumping through our hearts.
