The weekend began for me on Thursday night when I made my way to the HG a day or so earlier than usual when I stopped through to see Hot 104.1 FM’s Who’s Next showcase featuring Tory Lanez. Now my first instinct was to say “Who? Next…” and pay it dust, but the folks over at Radio One don’t put on mess and are quick to hip the folks to the “new new.” That being said, I fought the urge to rewind “Scandal” and punched it down 70 East just in time for Mr. Lanez to hit the stage. I’ll tell you what, he has a much more substantial following than I could have imagined. Especially considering I hadn’t heard of him until I googled him the night of the show to see if it was worth the gas to go down there. It was barely room to catch my breath up in there. I know folks have called him a Dollar Tree Drake being that he’s a Canadian sapper (singing rapper), but he’s pretty nice. And I don’t mean friendly, I mean on the mic. Considering how he packed out the HG on a weeknight, we haven’t heard the last of him. After the Who’s Next, I actually went home and googled him again. He spit fire on Sway’s morning show and had a decent singing voice in the STL. I wouldn’t be surprised if he and Drizzy formed a super duo that would sound like a cross between Simon and Garfunkel and The Throne. I really should’ve known more about Tory Lanez, but I didn’t. So I’m tipping my hat to Hot for putting me on.
