Especially if he makes a living pulling people out of burning buildings! Battalion Chief Adam Long wrote me all upset over my bit on the Experiential Auction that went down Sunday at the Royale. I mentioned they would be auctioning off – among a lot of other things – an ice cream with Fire Chief Sherman George and dancing and drinks in the Lou’s lesbian clubs with my boy hip-hop mix master Adam Long. I did not say BATTALION CHIEF Adam Long, a gentleman whose acquaintance I had not made until he wrote me this letter. It looks like the coincidence of a guy with his name being mentioned in the same sentence with his boss made folks think it was the battalion chief dude who knows lesbian bars well enough to steer people through them. And the brother in blue fell victim to some horrible homophobia. “Although I am not the Adam that you speak of in your article, it has caused a number of vicious rumors about my sexual orientation, and has embarrassed not only me, but my family. I kindly ask that your newspaper make it very clear that I am NOT the mix master. I have proudly served the St. Louis Fire Department for 28 years, have received two of its highest honors, and was the subject of a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo.” Is that clear now? The battalion chief is NOT on the down-low in the lesbian bars! (Bye the bye, the owner of The Royale, Steve Fitzpatrick Smith, won the bidding war for the ice cream with Chief George, who popped in at the end of the auction to buy his wife a burger, and Nina Thompson outbid everybody for the trip to the ballgame and art museum with Doc Suggs.)
