The Lucas Schoolhouse was full of black to the basics and music lovers last week for the April edition of Café Soul. Coco Soul and them really had the people groovin’ with the laid back vibe and good music. I saw my girl Leslie from Diversity Gallery was in the house as well. It was crazy because aside from a few hiccups, someone just stumblin’ in would have assumed that it was a bonafide set instead of an open mic session because the talent (especially the band) was just that tight. Christi Strickland and Marvin Michael were a couple of my favorites. But the MVP of the night goes to that doggone Wild Man (this is not a Delores Shante creation, but is in fact his real stage man). He was so funky on that bass he had me makin’ the “I’m really getting down” stank face like I was the one who was playin’ when I was propped up in my seat. Any time Christi stopped dead smack in the middle of her song to give him props on the mic – you know that he was jammin’ for real. Then he stepped on the to sing and I made the conscious and educated decision to lightweight stalk him. That boy is bad! His voice sounds like Bilal and John Legend had a baby. I’m lovin’ it somethin’ terrible. The next one will be on May 16th,so y’all should try to catch him and the other Café Soul usual suspects for yourself.
