Trust a big talker (and bigger doer) like Alice Prince to put together a spoken word series. She’s calling it Raw Sugar, and it’s gonna premier on January 26 @ the Improv and run every Thursday after that. “I am going to support poets and lyricists of all backgrounds,” A.P. told me on the email, saying her joint would be “the poetry peace set.” Not that there was ever a poetry war set, around heRRe, but I feel her. “My goal is to attract a culturally diverse audience.” That’s all good. Poetry doesn’t discriminate, why should poets? The Improv, if you ain’t been, is in the Union Station on the upper level, just east of the Hyatt Lobby. Admission to Raw Sugar is 1/2 off before 9 p.m., the set begins at 8 p.m., doors open at 7.
More from her email, here: “I chose Raw Sugar because the the legacy and symbolism behind the sugar cane fields. The color is brown before it is BLEACHED and ‘purified.’ I want poets and lyricists to come and reveal their souls. I want the spoken word to be given in its most rawest form!!!”
What’s to make folks think this ain’t just another poetry reading? “I am doing things like creating a montage at the beginning of each set that will highlight a special issue or topic, with black and white visuals in the hall, special decor, attendance giveaways.” And, A.P. says this is the first thing she did, just for her, after slinging PR for rappers a few years. Let’s spoil her.
