So I was rollin’ in the whip the other day and some song called “Smack That”, featuring Eminem, was playing. Now we already know about Marshall Mathers’ appetite for women-dissin’ lyrics, especially about his wife Kim (who he married and divorced twice).
He once flowed about killing her, chopping her up and putting her in the trunk of his car. Nice. And we ate it up like Thanksgiving dinner.
But I digress…back to the song, which is from Akon’s new CD Konvicted. Just the latest in a string of ridiculous hits from an even more ridiculous “artist” in my opinion. I immediately turned the station when I heard him sing, “smack that all on the floor, smack that till you get sore.” What in the misogynistic hell?! Yes, I had to pull out the big words cause ya girl was pissed. Why do women listen to and support this kind of garbage? And I’ve heard it all before…You don’t really listen to the words, you just like the beat. So if the KKK laced a dope track with lyrics about roundin’ up all the negroes I guess y’all would run out and cop that too. What ever happened to powerful and positive hip hop and r&b like Latifa’s “Ladies First?” and Prince’s “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World?” My people…please…its time that we start holding hip hoppers and these so-called “artists” to a higher standard. The next time an MC or singer comes with some whack, disrespectful lyrics we need to let ‘em know it ain’t cool by leaving that mess in the record store and strollin’ off the dance floor when DJs spin it at the club.
