I told you so. Did I say I told you so? Well, truth be told, I did say Tyler Perry was going to come out on top at the box office. Boyfriend surprised the naysayers, pulling in $22 million at the number one spot. He also schooled film’s comedy genre on making romance and slapstick work well. Tyler didn’t waste one comedic frame. He’s even giving Eddie Murphy a run for his money in pulling off multiple character portrayals. And I wouldn’t be surprised if in the near future he snatched a dramatic role in someone else’s film. He not only nailed the comedic roles as a gun-toting grandma and her likeminded curmudgeon of a brother, but he was good in his dramatic portrayal of an attorney caring for a young daughter and dealing with an estranged crackhead wife. Of course, Tyler produces and acts in his own movies. For this first film, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” an adaptation of his stageplay, he put up $2.5 million for $5.5 million production, which will be placed in several hundred more theatres. Good thing, because many of the theatres in the Lou posted “sold out” signs last weekend and this weekend could be the same. But change is coming for Tyler. Lions Gate Films, the studio that gave Tyler a flying chance with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” will fully fund his next stage to screen project, “Madea’s Class Reunion.” Looks like Tyler’s refusal to let people tell him what theatre is, has arrived on the big screen in style and he’s telling creatives what comedy is.
