Summer session starts in July
Now is the time to register for COCA’s Summer 2006 Visual Arts courses starting in July. Classes in watercolor, art studio, oil painting, book arts and more will be held at COCA’s U City location at 524 Trinity Avenue.
These courses focus on building fundamentals for students at all levels. Classes are taught by accomplished professional artists, including Belinda Lee, Carolyn Simon and Jessie Thomas, who have experience teaching beginning to advanced level visual arts courses.
The courses are designed for:
Middle School Students (Gr. 6-8)
Art Studio – Discover the elements of the visual arts: line, shape, color, texture and balance using a variety of media and materials including drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture. Runs July 5-31, 2 days/4 weeks.
High School Students (Gr. 9-12)
Painting – In this class the student learns the basics of oil painting. They will explore issues of color, composition, scale and technique. The class will work from still life, landscape and the portrait. Runs July 5-31, 2 days/4 weeks.
Visual Art Studios For Adults (Gr. 12+)
Book Arts – Students will get a taste of four different bindings and ways to use them as an artist. Participants will use Japanese stitch, a winged accordion or flag book, a matchbox book or a flutter small signature book using the long stitch style of binding to make books as works of art or personal sketchbooks. Runs July 10-31, 4 weeks.
Watercolor – The class will investigate traditional and non-traditional watercolor techniques. Students will look at examples of watercolor techniques from art history as well as contemporary artists that use wet media in innovative ways. There will be individualized attention to each student’s personal goals. Students will work in the studio and on-site. Runs July 5-26, 4 weeks.
Tuition for Visual Arts Classes during the COCA’s Summer Semester start at $120 ($110 for COCA Members). For more information about classes and registration or to receive a free copy of the Summer Program Guide, call (314) 725-6555 or visit www.cocastl.org
