Nathaniel Taylor, the actor best known for portraying the smooth talking Rollo on fellow St. Louis native Red Foxx’s hit sitcom “Sanford and Son” passed away on Feb. 27. He was 80 years old.
His death was announced on social media by his friend, the music promoter Alonzo Williams. Williams said Taylor was hospitalized on Feb. 23 after suffering a heart attack.
Taylor made guests appearances on several sitcoms and soap operas during the early 1970s, but it was his portrayal of Rollo on “Sanford and Son” that earned the St. Louis born actor a considerable and lasting fan base.
As the best friend of Sanford’s son Lamont, Rollo was the epitome of cool. He was the epitome of swagger with his sharp clothes and quick tongue – often stealing the scenes he appeared in during his 32-episode run.
Taylor reprised the role of Rollo in “Grady and Sanford.”
In addition to “Sanford and Son,” Taylor also appeared in “What’s Happening,” “227,” “The Redd Foxx Show,” “Adam-12” and “Police Story.” His film credits include 1972’s Black Girl and 1974’s Willie Dynamite.
Taylor is survived by his wife wife Loretta, four daughters and two sons. Services are pending.
