Your skin reflects the health of your body and soul.

Heat, dryness, sunlight and pollutants in the environment cause stress to our skin. An unbalanced diet, irregular lifestyle, day-to-day stresses, natural hormone fluctuations and certain life stages, such as puberty or pregnancy, can influence our skin’s appearance. To keep your skin looking healthy and radiant, you should develop a skin care regimen.

It is a good idea to have a skin care regimen because throughout the day, dirt, sweat, oils and bacteria collect on your face and need to be removed. If you wear foundation, your makeup will look better if your skin is in good shape. It’s important to remove all makeup before going to bed.

It is a good practice to start taking care of your skin at an early age and continue this throughout your life. It’s also NEVER too late to start taking care of your skin, even if you already have problems. Pampering your skin is not only good for your skin, it is good for YOU as well. This gives you the opportunity to do something extra for yourself and gives you time to relax.

Before developing a skin care regimen, you need to know what your skin type is. It’s not a good idea to mix and match skin care products from different companies. When a company develops a skin care line, they design the products to work together and have similar ingredients. For most skin types, you should do your skin care regimen in the morning and before going to bed. Those with oily skin can wash their face up to three times a day.

The first step of your skin care regimen is to cleanse the face. You should always wash your face with warm water. Never use cold or hot water when cleansing. Your cleanser should remove dirt and excess oil from your skin. A cleanser should never leave your skin feeling dry.

First, you wet your face with warm water. Then apply a little cleaner to the palm of your hand or to a soft washcloth (preferably cotton).

Next gently wash your face (with fingertips or soft washcloth) by using circular motions. Use upward strokes for your neck and cheeks and outward strokes for your cheekbones. Do this for about 30 to 90 seconds. Don’t scrub too hard with the washcloth; use gentle pressure. It also wouldn’t hurt to give special attention to the sides of your nose, under the chin area and neck.

Then rinse thoroughly with warm water. With a clean towel, gently pat your face dry.

It’s not a good idea to wash with soap because it will not completely remove makeup and may leave your skin feeling dry and tight. It can also disrupt the natural pH balance of your skin.

If you have acne or oily skin, it’s not a good idea to wash your face five or six times a day. You could be stripping your skin of natural oils and may cause the skin to produce more oils which could cause even more problems.
