McCarthy Building Companies donated 19 used laptop computers to St. Louis Byte Works, which runs an “Earn-a-Computer” program where local kids learn to build and fix computers and other life skills. During the free six-week program for fourth through eighth graders, kids attend a series of hands-on courses covering a range of topics from internet safety to computer programming. Each student who completes the program receives a free computer, audio speakers and a 4 GB flash drive for their personal use.
Computers donated by McCarthy were provided to Ferguson-area students through the Ferguson Youth Initiative, which serves the youth of the Ferguson community by encouraging them and engaging them as active members of the community.
“McCarthy’s donation of laptops and accompanying bags has allowed ByteWorks and its students to complete two sessions of our Earn-a-Computer class,” said ByteWorks Executive Director Patrick Van Der Tuin. “Donations such as this allow our organization to keep overhead low and spend our funding on delivering programs to youth in and around St. Louis.”
