After opening ceremonies at the Soldiers Memorial in downtown St. Louis to kick off Marine Week St. Louis 2011, Marine Lt. Col. T. Shane Tomko spoke with local members of the Mumford Point Marines, African-American veterans of the Corps, who were honored at the event. Over 20,000 U.S. Marines were trained at Mumford Point, later renamed Montford Point.

Members of the Hazelwood Central Middle School Girls on Track team gathered for a breakfast sponsored by their coaches, staff members Nicole Findley and Tonya Jackson. Girls on Track is a program for sixth- through eighth-grade girls. In it, girls train for a 5K race while they also participate in character education lessons with topics ranging from healthy eating to conflict resolution. They recently ran a 5K race in Forest Park. “The coaches tell us stuff that we need to know other than running,” said Courtenay Gillespie, who is in eighth-grade – “like self-esteem.”

Anthony Agnew, age 20, the father of a 1-year-old, is a student at Shearwater High School, a charter school in the city that focuses on preparing struggling teens for college. It has slots for 75 students, but at the end of its first year 40 of those were empty.

On hand for the Shrimp Shack Grill’s kick-off of its Be a Friend of Normandy Supporter fundraising campaign were Normandy school board president Cozy W. Marks Jr.; Mike Jones of the state Board of Education; Max and Joanna Davis, owners of the Shrimp Shack; and Normandy superintendent Stanton E. Lawrence. The Davises are donating 10 percent of the Shrimp Shack’s lunchtime proceeds to the Friends of Normandy School District Foundation.

Wisconsin state Senator Lena Taylor spoke during the annual Jefferson Jackson Democratic fundraising dinner in St. Louis last Friday. Along with the 13 other Democratic state senators, Taylor left Wisconsin to deny the State Senate a quorum on Governor Scott Walker’s legislation that repealed collective bargaining on benefits for public employees.
