  • The first-place grade level winners from each elementary and middle school recently competed for the title of Spelling Bee Champion in the 2012 Ferguson-Florissant School District Spelling Bee.

    The first-place elementary school winners include: Damon Conway, a fifth-grader at Cool Valley Elementary School; Abdullah Brown-El, a sixth-grader at Commons Lane Elementary School; and Marissa Hughes, a fourth-grader at Wedgwood Elementary School.

    The first-place middle school winners include: Nida Mutan, a seventh-grader at Cross Keys Middle School, and Aric Clinton, an eighth-grader at Ferguson Middle School.

    The district’s Spelling Bee Champion for the second year in a row is Isaac Orbin, a sixth-grader at Wedgwood Elementary School.

The Thunder won the series 4-1, and advanced to the Western Conference Finals.

  • The Boys Class 3 Sectional finals were held at MICDS on Saturday. University City senior Emmanuel Price took second in the long jump with a leap of 21-11.25.

  • The Girls Class 3 Sectional 2 finals were held at MICDS Saturday. University City’s Kayla Heidelberg won the Girls 100 meter hurdles with a winning time of 14.91.

  • When James H. Buford, longtime President and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, has announced his plans to retire a year from now. Buford, who turns 68 this week, has led the agency for 27 years. The St. Louis affiliate’s annual budget grew from $2.5 to $20 million under his leadership. The Seckman High School student is in serious need of a match due to a very rare form of cancer. Karen Cade, a 20-year member at the church, talks with Juanita Wilson, a nurse practitioner, about the simple bone marrow registry procedure.
