I can hardly believe it, but I have been writing “Sharing with Cassandra” for the St. Louis American for five years this fall.
I still remember meeting Dr. Suggs and talking at length about the American and his future dreams.
I am pleased to say that most of those aspirations have come through for the American – more readers, in-depth stories, the recognition of awards and a quality staff of writers, editors, assistants salespeople and more.
Dr. Suggs told me that I would enjoy writing for the American, and he was correct. He said that St. Louis had some of the most intelligent readers in the country and that it was a great city to live in.
He was correct again.
I often hear from my readers, and they tell me what they think about my columns.
I thought I would put together a top five of the most talked-about columns that I have written.
5. Son gets bead stuck up his nose and goes to the emergency room.
4. The fall is the best time of year (about a young mentally disabled boy whom I grew up with).
3. There is a lot to be thankful for (the award-winning column about my first experience with death when I lost a dear friend when we were both 10 years old).
2. When it’s time to go (a column about a friend of my husbands who came to work on our house and was supposed to stay three days but ended up staying 12).
1. In the face of adversity (the death of my dear friend to breast cancer).
It seems that my wonderful readers are moved by everyday stories of life, death, trials and victories.
You seem to enjoy laughing along with me at my family, my sons, my mishaps and adventures in “parenting.”
In the five years that I have been writing I have never missed a week, and that is because I so much enjoy checking in with you readers. I feel like we are extended family and that means a lot to me.
So, here’s to five years past and, God willing, many many more to come.
Thank you, dear readers, for your support and for “Sharing” with me every Thursday in the St. Louis American.
Thanks for sharing.
