I thought we made it. In the fall, I meant to, had planned to, even wrote the dates down n but I forgot to take my family to get the dreaded flu shot.

I read about it in the local and national papers, I researched it on the internet and heard various conversations regarding the pros of taking the shot.

“I took it last year, and I was the healthiest person in our entire house,” one mother exclaimed.

“Well, I took it and still got sick, but I think I would have been sicker if I had not taken it, so I am going to take it again,” one man said to another.

There, I had live testimonials as to why the flu shot was so important.

So, did we take the shot? NO!

I guess I could not squeeze it in between 57 basketball games spread out between four boys and one still hanging-on-to-his-youth husband.

Maybe I was just too plumb tired after a week of laundry, cooking, cleaning, organizing, you name it.

Whatever the reason, we missed it this year.

Somehow, I felt like we would be okay. After all, I was the one who always took excellent care of my family’s health issues. That should account for something, right?

By the end of February, I felt pretty secure that we had made it through the flu season, and not one of us had been stricken with the dreaded bug.

Five days ago, son number three woke me up at 3 a.m. with a fever of 103! He’s just spiking a temperature to fight off the common cold, I tried to convince myself.

By the next day, we were in the emergency care with another high-temperature alert.

Maybe it is strep, the doctor told me. But, then again, the flu did hit Missouri late this year.

It could not be the flu. If it was, then I would feel somewhat responsible. Yes, it must be strep.

The doctor returned with the news: it was, indeed, the flu.

He gave me some new prescription they have now to help speed up the recovery, and because it was new I found out that my health insurance didn’t cover the cost of the medicine.

Ninety dollars later, I was at home with son number three treating his illness.

Didn’t the flu shot only cost $10?

Thanks for sharing.
