Son number four and I like to go to thrift stores and in particular our local Goodwill, to see what “treasures” we can find.

I have taken all the boys over the years to these types of stores and usually give them a couple of dollars and let them treasure hunt away.

They have found some very interesting things, like a cup warmer that you plug in and let your cup (of coffee or whatever) sit on so it won’t get cold. They have found toys from when I was a little girl, like the Bionic Man.

They especially like looking at the old albums. Son number four once asked, “How did they ever fit these into CD players?”

We have come to make sure we pray before we go into any thrift store. Now that may sound odd to you, but if you could see how out of hand we get with some many “goodies,” you would understand.

Our prayer usually goes something like this: “Please, Lord, let us buy only what we need, not what we think we may need, or what we think someone we know needs, or even what we think would be so cool to have.”

This keeps us from having a garage full of other people’s trash, which became our treasures and now is our trash.

Well, the other day, son number four and I went shopping at our local Goodwill and we found a typewriter. I told him how I used an electric typewriter very similar to that one when I was in college.

“Can I please have it, Mommy? I want to type like you did. Please, please, please?” he begged.

I made him stop and pray about buying that typewriter because it would be with his money, not mine. We then decided to wait a day. I told him if he felt we should have it tomorrow, then we would go back.

The next day, he said he felt we should get it, so we went back. After we bought the typewriter, he said to me he understood why he should pray about decisions, even for a typewriter.

I asked him why. He then said because he may think he needs or wants that now, but maybe God has something better. He went on to say, “I can only see what is going on today, but God sees things that happen today and in our future. God sees things in HD.”

I laughed and told him how wise he was, especially for being only 9 years old.

I will try to remember when I am making decisions in my life that God does see things in HD.

Thanks for sharing.
