Sylvester Brown, Jr.

I’ve been hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray! I abandoned my own mantra: “Never underestimate the power of racism and ignorance.”

I let myself become optimistic about the presidential election. I fell for the hype, the hoopla and accepted the notion that Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign might beat political, racist foolishness and somehow equate to real progressive, universal “change” in this country.

Silly me.

All the signs that betrayed this false narrative were there. An old, befuddled white man was not universally shamed for referring to a distinguished, accomplished Black woman as “stupid” and a “low IQ” candidate.

Speaking of gender; I was also certain his running mate, Sen. JD Vance’s age-old sexist trope, describing women as “childless cat ladies” would repel most women who had already lost their rights to bodily autonomy because of Trump’s hand-picked supreme court justices.

Nope, 53% of white women voted for him.

I let myself believe that people of color would reject Donald Trump’s racist assertions that Haitian immigrants were eating dogs, cats and the pets of Springfield, Ohio residents.

Surely, voters of diverse backgrounds would not accept the fearmongering of a presidential candidate who baselessly claimed that millions of “illegals” from Mexico, Venezuela, the Congo were pouring into our country raping, stealing, murdering and pillaging at unprecedented rates.

There’s no way legalized voting immigrants would back someone who promised reckless mass deportation of people who look like them.

I was incorrect; 45% of self-identified Hispanic voters picked Trump, up from 32% in 2020.

Despite asking his defense secretary if he could shoot Black protestors then later promising to pardon convicted white insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol at his urging, Trump won an estimated 20% of the Black vote, doubling his take in 2020.

Because Trump won, some Democrats and the media are assuming he did something right.

I’m exhausted with all the “sane-splaining” of Harris’ so-called “failed” campaign. It was not her record as a prosecutor, senator, or vice president. It wasn’t her inability to connect with the middle class, nor was it her running mate, Minn. Gov. Tim Walz. Those making those claims are loathe to dissect the very real reasons she lost to Trump:

Ignorance and racism.

How did more than 74 million people go to the polls and vote for a convicted felon, a tax cheat, a verified conman, a serial liar, alleged sexual predator and leader of a violent insurrection? Sorry to be so blunt, but those of you who knew those things to be true and voted for him anyway…well, that’s a serious indictment on your intellect.

I know of no polls that accurately details the number of racists in America. But let’s be honest; something in the psyches of millions of voters resonates with Trump.

Race and stupidity.

I know that is politically uncool to say, but I’m no politician and the future consequences are too dire to be silent about what has happened and will continue happening in my country.

We have reverted to a time when antiquated racist feelings and uninformed sentiments influence who gets to lead America. This, while media pundits are loathe to discuss it openly.

As a proud African American and a 67-year-old graduate of this country’s ‘Negro experiment,’ I should have known better. I should have instinctively recalled the calamitous, backwards history and the deadly ramifications of whites who felt marginalized, threatened and powerless.

But alas, I allowed myself to be influenced by “hope” and the woefully naïve notion that, deep, deep down “real Americans”-despite their politics-believed in the Constitution and our supposed “tried and true” principles of democracy, fair play and justice for all.

But, in the end, ignorance and racism won out.

Shame on me for believing otherwise.

  1. Sylvester Brown nailed it.
Although, having less than 100 days to mount a presidential campaign and coming within 1.5 points of a former president is not a small accomplishment for a woman of color!
Her record never really came up. She ran an immaculate campaign. There just was not enough time to “get to know her.” As weak as that is, it is a valid argument. She didn’t run in the Democratic primaries, which could have addressed that. No, ignorance and racism ruled Nov. 5. And, now we have four years more of it.
It is a sad state of affairs that our state of affairs in race and gender remain stuck in the 1950s. We have not evolved as a people and now we will be dragged backwards against our will.
I will never forgive the registered voters who did not turn out as they did in 2020 for Joe Biden. But I will forever hold responsible those who voted against her for the pathetic reasons of race and gender.

  2. As always, a powerful and true editorial from Sylvester Brown. I agree: the racism and ignorance of more than half of Americans did the deed. Many of them overtly embrace Trump’s hate: racism, xenophobia, misogyny, homophobia, ableism, etc. The rest were willing to overlook racism, xenophobia, misogyny, homophobia, ableism, etc. for the promise of a buck off the price of eggs—which is itself a form of bigotry and shows they loved money more than their neighbor, which I think is a sin. Harris and Walz ran a good campaign and stepped up when things were dire. They just couldn’t beat the hate. What do I hope now? That I never forget what kind of a nation America really is.

  3. Sorry, folks. Kamala Harris was not elected because she was either non-white or a woman. She is totally incapable as she proved as Vice President. In addition, she was forced on the people and not voted in by the Democrat constituency. “Racism” is an overused and false slander against many. Thinking always and only Black and not merit or capability is a gross form of racism itself, and many Blacks recognize it for what it is and who the race baiters are. Black racists are Black supremacists and as guilty as any other racists. It’s time to take responsibility and accountability for this equally ugly racism. Condoleezza Rice would have made a most capable first Black and female President.

    1. You are showing your ignorance. Explain the logic of anyone voting for DT instead of Kamala Harris. Was he more qualified?? No. What was DTs “merit” or “capability”? He is nothing but a white man being given a “pass” for his ignorance, sexism, and yes, racism. A TV personality, a failed businessman, an ex-president who tried to overthrow a fair election. A chronic liar. And yet, most white Americans PREFERRED him. Why? Because he is a white man. There is no other explanation.

      1. No, it is not ignorance. It’s facts stated by people of diverse races. Actually, your response evidences racism. A majority of people are not voting color; they’re voting policies that protect the country, security, ensure equality under the law, and many other reasons. Your perspective is completely through the lens of race rather than the issues facing this country–issues that brought people of all races together. Trump definitely has faults, but Biden has many of the same and Kamala has a history of lying and not living up to her obligations. Try seeing issues through objectivity rather than through skin color.

      2. Also, Ms. Wright, many Black Christians are against killing the unborn recognizing it as murder of the most vulnerable as do Christians of other races. Kamala Harris promised to make that no doctor, nurse, or healthcare worker could be exempt for any reason from being forced to participate in abortions and killing these innocents. Yes, many Blacks have moral convictions as a great many Christians of other races.

        1. You can’t just go around lying like this, unchecked. Your ignorance is an embarassment and you ought to be ashamed of yourself for promoting hate and misinformation. Morals have nothing to do with this– you are a hate monger. Period.

          1. Obviously, you don’t know many, if any, Black Christians who love the Lord and His Word. One of my dear Black Christian friends couldn’t vote for Obama because he was for killing the unborn even if they survived the abortion attempt. Yes, there are genuinely righteous Black Christians who don’t hate others as you appear to.

    1. Then my comments to her are addressed to you too. I have supported mostly Black candidates, and they are all Christian and Republican because the Democrat Party has become so radically leftist.
