The African-American Male Initiative at St. Louis Community College was creat ed in 2009 as a response to the needs of black male students on the Florissant Valley and Forest Park campuses. A federal grant funds the mentoring and student-resource program.

Eligibility:

African-American male students who are currently attending classes on either the Florissant Valley or Forest Park campus must be currently enrolled in at least 6 credit hours and have earned less than 25 credit hours of college coursework.

“The African-American Male Initiative is a great initiative, but how much does it cost? $1.2 million annually,” said Cindy Hess, president of the Forest Park campus.

“The challenge is to make those kinds of efforts sustainable. What that means is that we learn from this effort and apply it to our existing staff in the way they do their business.”
