Chicago Defender wins Russwurm Award

NNPA staff report

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (NNPA) – Los Angeles Sentinel Publisher Danny Bakewell was elected the new chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, a federation of more than 200 black-owned newspapers, by fellow publishers during NNPA’s annual summer conference, held in Minneapolis, Minn., last week.

Bakewell is founder and CEO of the Brotherhood Crusade, a philanthropic organization that addresses issues in communities of color. He is also co-founder of the United Black Front, founded in the late 1960s to unite 50 black power organizations.

The former advisor to the late L.A. Mayor Tom Bradley bought the now 76-year-old Sentinel in 2004. In 2007 it won the NNPA Russwurm Award for “the best black newspaper in America.”

This year’s Russwurm, revealed last week, went to the Chicago Defender, with two first place and two third place awards, including the John H. Sengstacke General Excellence Award.

The St. Louis American won two first-place awards (Best Editorial, Best News Picture), second place in Best Circulation Promotion, and four third-place awards (Best Layout and Design, Best Use of Photographs, Best Sports Page and Best Entertainment Section).
