The 6th Annual Community Women Against Hardship “Walk for Life” walk-a-thon will be held at Tower Grove Park on Saturday, June 5.

Presented by CWAH, AmerenUE and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, this event is intended to encourage and empower healthy choices and lifestyles.

“The Community Women Against Hardship organization provides programs and resources to families struggling with poverty to become self sufficient,” said Richard Mark, senior vice president of Customer Operations for AmerenUE.

“Like CWAH, the employees of AmerenUE are working together to help strengthen the communities we live in. Our partnership enables CWAH to extend their support to families in need.”

Honorary co-chairs are Ray Armstead, 1984 Summer Olympic Gold medalist; Dr. Jacqueline Hall-Davis, child psychiatrist; Dr, Perdita Fisher, Fisher Wellness Center; Kimberly Gray, STD/HIV Prevention Training Center; Dr. Alex Harris, director of Externships. University of Missouri-St. Louis; Dr. Evelyn A. Irving, family therapist; Dr. Christy Richardson, North County Endocrinology; and Dr. Jacqueline Turner, obstetrics/gynecology.

These physicians and practitioners will be available at various booths to respond to questions/concerns. There will be mobile units for HIV/AIDS and diabetes testing.

“HIV/AIDS has disproportionately hit our African-American community, a community which now accounts for 51 percent of all cases of HIV/AIDS within the St. Louis region,” said Kimberly Gray.

“While the greatest increase is among African-American men, women are emerging as a new population affected by HIV/AIDS. Women make up nearly 20 percent of reported cases; African-American women account for 90 percent of those cases.”
