Bishop Jesse Battle, vice president of the Ecumenical Leadership Council, is asking member churches to raise a special donation for victims of the earthquake in Haiti during their Sunday morning worship on January 31, 2010.

The Ecumenical Leadership Council, one of the leading

African-American clergy organizations in Missouri. Its founding members include Bishop Battle, Rev. Linden Bowie, Rev. Jimmy Brown, Elder Carol Johnson, Rev. James Morris, Rev. Douglas Parham, Rev. Tommie Pierson, Rev. E. G. Shields Jr., Bishop James Stewart, Elder Q. Whitlock Jr. and Bishop L. M. Wooten. Bishop Alphonso Scott is president.

Bishop Battles called on church members “to respond to the critical need of the millions of Haitians that were injured as a result of the most devastating earthquake their country has ever experienced.”

In addition to the enormous number of casualties, Battle emphasized that “millions more are in immediate need of life-saving food, medicine, clothing and shelter.”

The council also is soliciting non-affiliated churches to ask their congregations to support the Haitian relief efforts.
