A refugee youth performing arts ensemble is offering paid internships to students, ages 11 to 18, who show interest in the arts.
The International Playground is a program offered by the Center for Survivors of Torture and War Trauma, 1077 S. Newstead Ave. In its eighth year, the program serves as a safe place for refugee youth to come together, share experiences, develop original creations, and perform, said organizers.
The internship runs from February 2011 through May 2011. Through poetry, song, dance, monologues, and skits, participants will tell their stories. The project will culminate with a live public performance for the community.
This year the group will be focusing largely on the music, said program director Mark Pagano.
“Bring your voices, beats, drums, lyrics, song ideas, and curiosity and get involved in this unique music-making experience,” Pagano said. “If music doesn’t move you, bring what does.”
No experience is necessary, but students should have a genuine interest in the performing arts. For more information and/or transportation contact Mark Pagano, program director, at 488-7135.
