Venezia Manuel, eighth grader at AM Jackson Math & Science Academy in East St. Louis, Karmen Haywood, fifth grader at AM Jackson, and Angelica Howard, sixth grader at AM Jackson, received awards recently at the 24th Annual Science Fair at the Gateway Center in Collinsville.

Opal Brown was faculty sponsor of Manuel and Howard, while D.L. Brown was Haywood’s sponsor. Not shown: Shanae Drummond, 11th grader at East St. Louis Senior High School, who won the Originality award.

The two-day fair, which received 325 exhibits, was sponsored by the SIUE East St. Louis Center TRIO Programs.

University Women Founder’s Day

On April 20, the National Association of University Women will host its Annual Founder’s Day Celebration at Norman K. Probstein Golf Course in Forest Park.

Jamala Rogers, head of the City’s Office of Youth Development and American columnist, will speak.

There are over 80 branches of the organization throughout the U.S. Branches of NAUW sponsor tutorial services, voter education, parent programs, leadership development and youth programs.

“Our Founder’s Day is a celebration of university-educated women who set examples of excellence in education, give back to the community and support others in their scholastic and academic achievement,” said Cynthia Price, St. Louis branch.

“We continue this tradition by providing for those in need, hosting oratorical contests and HIV awareness workshops, and giving scholarships to selected graduating seniors.”

Minority Health Fair April 19

The Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Centers (BJK PHC), in conjunction with Saint Louis University School of Medicine and Washington University School of Medicine, will sponsor a free health fair, in recognition of Minority Health Month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 19 at 5701 Delmar Blvd.

The event targets all persons who are in need of health care and may be financially challenged. The entire family is encouraged to attend. Health grant forum April 28

Organizations interested in improving health care in their communities should attend an upcoming meeting hosted by Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH). Attendees can learn more about grant programs available through the foundation.

The meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 28, 9:30 – 11:30 am, at the Regional Arts Commission, 6128 Delmar, in St. Louis.

The meeting is free and designed for nonprofits focusing on community action, health care, community development, and faith-based services, along with community service clubs and other human service providers and community leaders.
