Jazz St. Louis recently presented the Normandy Middle School Band with 24 new jazz instruments at the school’s annual Spring Band Concert, with help from Monsanto Fund and Yamaha. The donation is part of Jazz St. Louis’ Adopt-a-School program. Deltas reunite, offer scholarship

The St. Louis Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will hold a black-tie dinner dance from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. May 31 at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 11237 Lone Eagle Drive in Bridgeton. Also, the chapter and the Delta Life Development Foundation are seeking applicants for the Young Leaders of Distinction Scholarship and the Elaine M. Diggs Scholarship. Awardees will receive up to $1,000 toward tuition, books or living expenses.

To qualify, applicants must be African-American female students who are college-bound or currently attending an accredited college or university in pursuit of an undergraduate degree. To apply for either scholarship, applicants must submit an application with an original letter of acceptance or an official transcript from an accredited college or university along with written verification of completion of 40 hours of volunteer service in the St. Louis community within the last two years, two letters of recommendation and a biographical essay of 500 words or less that reflects your past, present and desired future.

Early childhood screening

Screening for students who will be entering early childhood programs in the Normandy School District during the 2008-09 school year will be held through May 30. Screenings will take place daily and by appointment, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the district’s Early Childhood/Kindergarten Complex, 3417 St. Thomas More Lane. Appointments can be made by calling 493-0880.

Parents must bring the child’s birth certificate, updated immunization records, social security card, proof of parent’s residence, and a picture ID of the parent /legal guardian.

In order for a child to enter the pre-school program, he/she must be three years old by July 31. In order for a child to enter the pre-kindergarten program, he/she must be four years old by July 31. All early childhood programs in the district are full-day programs.
