Bruce Tipton, owner of Tipton and Sons Towing, has told Garfield Elementary School students that “coming to school every day and making good grades sets the stage for future achievements.”
But it’s more than talk. To encourage students’ daily attendance, Tipton has pledged to donate 76 new bikes and helmets – 19 per quarter – as incentive rewards. Students in each of the 19 classrooms at Garfield who maintain perfect attendance during the quarter will participate in a drawing to receive the bikes and helmets.
He has also pledged to donate gift certificates to staff members who maintain perfect attendance.

Teen drivers need to buckle up
Law enforcement agencies across Missouri will be looking for teens who aren’t buckled up though Oct. 21 as part of a special effort to encourage seat belt use among young people.
While a statewide survey released in September showed more teens are buckling their seat belts than ever before – 61 percent in 2007 compared to 58 percent in 2006 – the number is still well below the 77 percent usage rate for all Missourians.
Of the 153 teens killed in traffic crashes in 2006, 73 percent were not buckled up. Missouri’s Graduated Driver License law requires safety belt use for teens and their passengers.
