The Nursery Foundation of St. Louis received a $20,000 check from Ronald McDonald House Charities towards the construction of a new playground.

The Nursery Foundation’s mission is to provide quality, developmentally appropriate childcare and education to preschool children, regardless of their families’ ability to pay full tuition.

The new playground ribbon cutting/dedication ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 19 at The Nursery Foundation, 1916 N. Euclid Ave.

Midlife Divorce Seminar

A Women’s Midlife Divorce Seminar, sponsored by OWL n The Voice of Midlife and Older Women, will be held 9:15 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, October 18, at the Brentwood Community Center, 2505 S. Brentwood Blvd. (on the west side of Brentwood Blvd. between, Hwy. 40 and Manchester Road).

Speakers will address the legal, financial and emotional issues that face women before, during and in the wake of divorce, with a focus on women who have been in long-term marriages.

Speakers are attorney Ann Bauer, partner in the law firm of Carter Bauer Soule; Janet Poppen CPA, president of Poppen & Associates CPA’s P.C. ; and Margaret Rissman, Ph.D., licensed clinical psychologist.

Trade unionist banquet Oct. 25

The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists is hosting its 22nd Annual Ernest and De Verne Calloway Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 25 at the Renaissance Grand Hotel, 800 Washington Ave.

The awards are given in honor and memory of Ernest Calloway, former director of Education for Teamster’s Local 688, and his wife DeVerne Calloway, who was the first female African-American state representative elected to the Missouri Legislature.

This year’s awardees are state Rep. Robin Wright-Jones and We Can MO. Both built coalition campaigns of labor and community groups to win victories this year. Wright-Jones won the Democratic nomination for the 5th state senatorial seat and We Can MO defeated the Ward Connerly’s initiative to destroy affirmative action in Missouri.

Local Control rally

The Coalition Against Police Crimes and Repression will host a rally and march at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22 as part of the National Day of Protest Against Police Brutality. The rally, held at Poelker Park (12th and Market), is called “Towing Local Control Back to St. Louis” and will focus on the scandal within the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and Local Control of City police.
