Special to The American

In celebration of Founders Weekend, the Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. visited with the children of Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center recently as a service project.

Over 25 mentors from the Epsilon Lambda Foundation visited with the center’s youth, ages 6-18, both male and female. Children also received giant holiday stockings, gift cards and other treats.

The goal was to inspire the children to seek information relative to their future. Many members discussed the importance of education and making good decisions.

A memorable quote from fraternity member Eddie Davis that was repeated by several of Annie Malone’s children: “It pays to be educated, it costs to be stupid.”

“We finally figured out that we had to seek information to answer the questions that were being asked,” said a student from Annie Malone’s Emerson Academy Therapeutic School.

As children listened to several of the members mention “the biggest disability in life is a bad attitude,” parents from Annie Malone’s school became engaged as well, as they nodded heads and whispered in agreement.

“I have always tried to tell my kids that the choices you make today determine your future, but I guess sometimes it only sinks in when they hear it from someone else,” said an Emerson parent.

“It’s always great to have a group of strong leaders from civic and social organizations around to mentor to our youth,” said Tiffany Bryant, director of social services for Annie Malone.

“We are very honored for the Epsilon Lambda Chapter’s 23 years of service and look forward to many more,” said Angela Starks, chief executive officer for Annie Malone.

Annie Malone also prepared for the children to participate in Project Alpha 2010, a one-day workshop where they learned about abstinence, HIV/AIDS and other topics impacting African-American youth.
