The American Heart Association and the Express Scripts Foundation will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a Power to End Stroke Health Fair and Luncheon on Saturday, January 15 at the Sheraton Hotel, located at 400 S. 14th Street in downtown St. Louis.

Stoke is a serious and disproportionately prevalent health issue among African Americans. The health fair intends to increase awareness of the risk factors and early warning signs for stroke in the African American community.

“It is a leading cause of severe long-term disability, and more than 100,000 African Americans will suffer a new or re-occurring stroke this year,” said Dr. Angela Brown. “We need to reach as many people as possible to help them to reduce their risk and to know what to do in a stroke emergency to help improve stroke outcomes.”

The event will be held from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. with free screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, HIV/AIDS, dental and body mass. Local physicians will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrations of CPR. Each participant screened will be entered into a drawing to win a Nintendo Wii game system.

A heart healthy lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. During the luncheon program, participants will hear from a physician, a stroke survivor and special musical guest Regina Belle.
