At its 2009 Scovel Richardson Scholarship Dinner this Saturday, the Mound City Bar Association will honor a number of area legal professionals.
Kimberly J. Norwood, a professor of Law and of African & African-American Studies at Washington University, will receive the 2009 Community Service Award.
Gayle Williams, associate director of Administration for Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, will receive the 2009 Legal Services Award.
The Mound City Bar also will recognize the NAACP on its 100th Anniversary and honor its own 2008-2009 Legal Legends, The Honorable Anne-Marie Clarke and Thad Hollie, Esq.
Kirsten Staples, who has completed her first year of law school at Saint Louis University and is currently a summer associate at Bryan Cave LLP, is the recipient of the 2009 Scovel Richardson Scholarship in the amount of $7,000.
The Scovel Richardson Scholarship was established in recognition of the outstanding contributions Judge Richardson made to the legal profession. Judge Richardson was a member of the Mound City Bar Association and served as president of the National Bar Association prior to his appointment by President Dwight Eisenhower as a member of the Federal Parole Board.
Judge Richardson was appointed to the U.S. Customs Court in 1957 and served in that position until his death.
Since its establishment as the St. Louis Negro Bar Association on January 13, 1922, the Mound City Bar Association has been at the forefront of providing service to and advocating on behalf of the African-American community and the community at large.
The Mound City Bar Association is the oldest black bar association west of the Mississippi River. Its objectives are to advance the professional interests and professional development of its members; promote the administration of justice; uphold the honor of the legal profession; and provide service to the community.
The 2009 Scovel Richardson Scholarship Dinner will be held on Saturday, June 27 at Windows Off Washington, 701 North 15th Street, #10.
The President’s Reception honoring the 100th Anniversary of the NAACP will begin at 6 p.m. Dinner and Awards Program will begin at 7:30 p.m.
