Chokwe Lumumba will be the keynote speakers at the 31st Anniversary Celebration of the Organization for Black Struggle (OBS). The dinner program will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, January 29 at the Gateway Classic, 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King.
Lumumba is the attorney for Jamie Scott and Gladys Scott, two sisters who were released recently from Mississippi prison after serving 16 years for an $11 robbery. The sisters gained international attention for the harsh and excessive life sentences Their release comes at a time when Jamie, who is on dialysis, is in dire need of a new kidney.
Lumumba also has defended Assata Shakur, the Pontiac Brothers, Tupac Shakur and Elliot Culp, to name a few.
Lumumba will address the anniversary theme, “Black Empowerment in the Age of Obama.” The attorney and community activist is able to add another dimension to his political assessment. In 2009, Lumumba successfully won a campaign for city councilman in Jackson, Missi.
OBS is a long-time champion of human rights in the St. Louis metropolitan area, giving leadership to many community issues such as police brutality, labor, education, electoral politics and prison reform.
