September is ‘Safe Sex Month’

Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region has declared the month of September as “Safe Sex” month, conducting a series of on-campus visits at local colleges and universities to promote safe sex practices among students.

In a recent survey of college students, when questioned about their first sexual experience, 32 percent of men and 24 percent of women reported that sex wasn’t planned, and things went further than expected.

“Those first few weeks away from home are one of the most crucial times for young people when it comes to decisions about safe sex,” said Paula Gianino, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region.

“The FDA recently approved the behind-the-counter status of Emergency Contraception, also known as Plan B, and Merck’s cervical cancer/HPV vaccine Gardasil has been approved by the FDA, endorsed by the CDC, and is currently available at all of our six community-wide Planned Parenthood locations. There is no better time to reach out to students to remind them about safe sex and inform them of these current developments.”
