Older people, especially those with health problems, will be at risk during heat warnings until September, warns Mid-East Area Agency on Aging.

“Your local senior center is one of your best defenses in beating the daytime heat,” says Jamie Opsal, MEAAA senior center director. “Anyone age 60 and older is welcome to come in for relief from hot weather and a nutritious meal as well.”

If you don’t have an air conditioner, find the number of your nearest center by calling MEAAA at (636) 207-1323 or (800) AGE-6060. Also call for information on agencies that can provide emergency assistance with paying utility bills. There is no charge for MEAAA services, although donations are welcome.

If you suspect an elderly person is suffering from the heat and needs assistance, you should call the state’s toll-free adult abuse hotline at (800) 392-0210, open 24 hours a day.
