A new family literacy workshop for parents whose children will enter kindergarten next year is available from the Hazelwood School District. Called Moon L.I.G.H.T. (Literacy Initiative, a Guide for Home and Tutors), it is designed to give parents ideas on how to bring stories to life. The workshops are available to children who attend private or public schools in the Hazelwood School District.

The first workshop is scheduled for Thursday, January 12 at Grannemann Elementary. All workshops start at 6 p.m. and end at 7:30 p.m. At the workshop, parents will learn the techniques classroom teachers use to encourage literacy with their children. With a collection of children’s poems and nursery rhymes to choose from, children may select a picture book to take home and parents will receive an instructional video, alphabet chart and children’s literature.

Child care will be provided during the workshops. During the second portion of the literacy session, pre-kindergarten will join their parents to work on exercises together using a set of magnetic letters, crayons, glue stick, pencil, story cards and a picture book. Parents may take home the workshop materials, which can then be utilized to help their kids develop their thinking and literacy skills.

Registration forms are available at all district elementary schools. For more information, contact Debbie Dill at the Hazelwood East Early Childhood Center at (314) 741-4126.
