To raise awareness of prostate cancer risk in the African-American community, the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine will sponsor the third annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Walk and Screening.

The walk is a St. Louis community initiative held in conjunction with the Missouri Black Expo at America’s Center on Saturday, August 20. The walk is made possible by the 100 Black Men of St. Louis, the Missouri Black Expo, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Missouri, the National Physician and Family Referral Project and the Siteman Cancer Center.

In 2005, the partnership aims for 5,000 walkers and 500 PSA screenings from Siteman Cancer Center prostate cancer experts. The screenings will take place immediately following the walk.

African-American men are 60 percent more likely to get prostate cancer than white males, and are twice as likely to die from prostate cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that African-American men begin screening at age 45.

On the day of the event, on-site registration is 7 a.m., with a warm up at 8 a.m. before the walk officially begins at 9 a.m.

Walk participants get free admission to the Missouri Black Expo. For more information or to register for the walk, call (314) 385-2100 or register at www.prostatecancerwalk.com.
