The St. Louis region just experienced one of the worst storms in recent memory. It proved to be the first real-world test of the city’s new 911 system. As expected, the system was inundated with calls for emergency services. Our communications employees and first responders performed brilliantly under the hectic circumstances.
The Comptroller’s Office’s telecommunications section oversaw the financing, purchase, installation and testing of the system last September. St. Louis’ system is so advanced, we were the first major U.S. city to match this 911 technology with AT&T’s existing digital central office equipment. The July 19 storm validated that we made the right 911 equipment choice.
I salute Police Chief Joe Mokwa, Fire Chief Sherman George and all our dedicated first responders on a job well done. With technology and teamwork, St. Louis city prevented a difficult situation from becoming even worse.
