It is wrong to refer to Martin Matthews as the founder of the Matthews-Dickey Boys Club. He is the cofounder. It reeks of disloyalty and disrespect for the perceived legacy of my father, Dickey, or Hubert H. (Dickey) Ballentine, also a cofounder.
We, born in St. Louis, obviously have allowed a set to come to St. Louis who became prominent and possibly rich without paying the dues of my family. St. Louis appears to be regressing in racism, now from the hands of blacks.
My dad was humble in his commitment to the boys’ club and chose to allow Martin Mathews to place his name first in the club’s name. He fought me about my criticisms of Martin Mathews and his inability to recognize unselfish commitment to community service.
