As an American, I was quite moved by the courage and determination shown by the Iraqi people to cast their vote for the first time this past weekend.
During the last election, I remember hearing a few St. Louis voters asking what the weather was going to be like, stating that they were not going to vote if the weather was bad.
Men, women and children went to the polls in Iraq in fear of bullets and suicide bombers, which reminded me of the determination and courage once demonstrated by African Americans, who went to the polls knowing that members of the KKK and other racists might try to stop them.
It is ironic that we have come as far as we have, only to ask, “What is the weather like today?”
