In a recent effort to force Superintendent Ed Hightower and the Edwardsville Board of Education to establish a policy requiring all their building contractors to hire African Americans, we opposed and defeated Proposition “S” which was a ballot referendum intended to raise money to build more schools.

Superintendent Hightower and the Edwardsville Board of Education refused and failed to require their building contractors to diversify in their hiring practices and include African-American workers. Our action opposing the school referendum was taken because it is the only leverage black people in Edwardsville have to encourage the Edwardsville Board of Education and Superintendent Ed Hightower to treat African-Americans fairly.
