The first step in rebuilding the political establishment in St. Louis, where the community voice is heard and taken seriously by government, is for every one who can to vote. Our leadership is tasked to a significant extent to mobilize the community and turnout the vote. And the people have to realize the importance and the urgency enough to make the effort.

State Auditor and US Senate Candidate Claire McCaskill is poised to become the next Democrat in the US Senate from Missouri. The St. Louis region should play a deciding factor in a victory for Senate Candidate Claire McCaskill.

The community has to show up on November 7, 2006 in large numbers. The Democratic side of the Missouri House and Senate, with the help of community leaders turned back Senate Bill 1014, the law requiring Voters to have a state issued ID. Now, Missouri is poised to elect a Democrat to the US Senate and a chance to fight for real change with a leader who has demonstrated a commitment to democratic causes and the St. Louis community, State Auditor Claire McCaskill.

It is time for Democrats to win again. We have the power to effect a change and deliver new leadership to Missouri and the country; if we don’t use it we only weaken the community politically.

There was a time when the African American community rallied around one or two powerful political leaders and they served as the impetus to voter turnout and political movements. Those days may be a thing of the past. Political power in government is now spread amongst many very talented elected leaders.

The challenge is to channel those collective talents, power and put forth an effort that serves the greater good in our community.

However, special interest, self interest and down right divisiveness have caused our leadership to be ineffectual in many areas, healthcare, public schools failings, community development, national security and economic development-jobs.

There is a phase that says, “Yes, we can”. I believe we must internalize this idea. Yes, we can be a powerful city and region; if we hold accountable those we would lead the community. Yes, we can have a powerful political presence locally and nationally if we vote. Yes, we can have better schools, healthcare for all people, community development if we challenge our leaders to deliver.

The November 2006 elections are just six weeks away. The Democratic GOTV machine is in full swing.

The Democratic Party offices locally are mustering their troops. It is time to win again for the Democrats!
