I was ecstatic to learn of the partnership between College Summit and the St. Louis Public Schools to help young people hone their writing skills in preparation for the college application process. In serving on many scholarship selection committees, my experience has been that it is often the writing skills exhibited in required essays that separate the recipients from the non-recipients.

In many instances, overcoming financial barriers through individual scholarships is the deciding factor on whether a talented, deserving young person receives a higher education. Effective writing skills are the foundation for a successful college experience and beyond. Hats off to College Summit and SLPS for demonstrating their belief that “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”
